As California's gubernatorial recall election unfolds in the weeks ahead, the public will get an unprecedented glimpse into the campaigns through a chronicle of images shot by, or of, the candidates themselves.

Taking the concept of "embedded journalism" a step further, the first-of- its-kind Candidate Camera project puts a new Gateway T-50 five-megapixel digital camera directly in the hands of the candidates, who may submit one image per day for posting on http://www.candidatecamera.com/ . The site will provide a mounting day-by-day photo diary of a campaign unique in American history.
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly -- one of the pioneers of behind-the-scenes political photography -- is editor of the project. Its sponsor is Gateway, which yesterday introduced four digital cameras that combine premium features with exceptional value.
"Digital media and the Internet have made it possible for average individuals to express their views to a broad audience -- and the Candidate Camera project uses these powerful tools to level the playing field for the dozens of candidates in this election," said Kennerly. "Whether they're highly visible or virtual unknowns, all candidates can reach the public directly with images that illustrate their beliefs and their personalities as they campaign. The Candidate Camera project promises to be an engaging form of democracy in action."
Participating candidates are now receiving their Gateway digital cameras and already have begun submitting their first photos. The Candidate Camera website goes live this morning at 6:00 a.m. PDT with these initial photos; the site will expand daily through the election on Tuesday, Oct. 7. To date, more than 115 candidates have agreed to participate -- from career politicians to grassroots candidates, single-issue activists and fringe personalities.
Participating candidates may submit one photo daily for posting on http://www.candidatecamera.com/ . Each day, Kennerly will select one newly submitted photo to be spotlighted as the daily featured image on the website's homepage. The public can view candidates' campaign photo albums by clicking on their names on the website.
Considered one of the greatest photographers of our time, Kennerly has been photographing history for four decades. In 1972, at age 25, Kennerly won the Pulitzer Prize for his remarkable photographs of the Vietnam War. At 27, he was asked by President Gerald Ford to serve as his official White House photographer.
