Fed: Beazley blamed rolling strikes on Reith

Opposition Leader KIM BEAZLEY has blamed Workplace Relations Minister PETER REITH for
today's strike by up to 40,000 Victorian manufacturing workers.

Ms BEAZLEY says the strike is a direct result of his Act which effectively prevents
bargaining during the course of an agreement, and loading all the industrial argument
at the end of an agreement period.

He says employers can thank PETER REITH'S inflexibilities for the situation they now
find themselves.

The strike is organised by the Metal Trades Federation of Unions to pressure employers
into signing a deal which includes a 15 per cent pay rise over 33 months and improved
conditions.

It comes as government legislation outlawing industry-wide industrial action is due
to be debated in the Senate.
