NAPRANUM, Cape York, Qld, Aug 5 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard today visited theCape York Aboriginal Community at Napranum to discuss alcohol restrictions there whichhave led to a major drop in violence and related injuries.

The community implemented rules limiting alcohol to the local canteen two months ago, following the example of nearby Aurukun.

Cape York Land Council chief executive Richard Ah Mat said the ban had been extremelysuccessful, leading to a more peaceful, industrious community.

"This was a war zone, now it's a peaceful community," he told Mr Howard.

Mr Howard told community leaders there was no doubt in his mind there was a link betweenalcohol and domestic violence.

"I want to understand how the alcohol restrictions are working and whether they arethe sort of policies that can be adopted in other parts of Australia," he told the localradio station.

"It is very important that people have responsibility in tackling their own problemsand not have solutions imposed on them."
