NEW YORK While many New Yorkers spent New Year's Day recovering from New Year's Eve, there was no relaxation for 45 sanitation workers who devoted themselves to cleaning up Times Square.
The crews began working at 10 p.m. Saturday and finished up Sunday afternoon. By the time they were done, they'd carted away about 50 tons or 100,000 pounds of rain-soaked cups, hats, horns, paper and balloons.
``Looking at Times Square now, you wouldn't know there'd been 400,000 people throwing 100,000 pounds of garbage around last night,'' said Lucian Chalfen, a spokesman for the Sanitation Department.
