NSW: Police injured in violent protest

SYDNEY, April 6 AAP - Two police officers were injured during violent protests outsidethe Israeli Consulate in Sydney this afternoon, police said.

The two policeman were guarding the door of the consulate when missiles, includingtimber, rocks and metal, were thrown, Rocks Police Acting Superintendent Phil Rogersonsaid.

About 4,000 protesters took part in the authorised pro-Palestinian march from TownHall to the US Consulate in Martin Place before moving on to the Israeli Consulate inYork Street.

A small group of agitators broke through police lines and attacked the front doorsof the building which houses the consulate, prompting mounted police to move in.

The two policemen received minor facial injuries but did not require hospitalisation,Detectice Sergeant Rogerson said.

"Two officers were injured, however they weren't severe and they remained on duty atthe front door," he told reporters in Sydney after the protest.

He laid the blame for the violence on a small group of demonstrators within the crowd.

"Certain sections of that protest group had some items in their possession and threwthem at police," he said.

He said protest organisers assisted police throughout the march and marshalls usedby organisers handed in some of the missiles now under investigation.

Police say no arrests were made during the demonstration and no other injuries were recorded.

The rally called for an international peacekeeping force to be sent into the troubledregion and for greater pressure to be applied on Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territoryby the Australian Government.
